“Purcell is, of course, a strong element with two Pavans and a Sonata but there is also the admirable hand of John Jenkins’ with his 18th Fantasia and Matthew Locke’s Suite No 5, which could be said to be the more strikingly original number of the lot. Bell’Arte Antiqua plays with superb vision and exemplary finesse and they are indeed a joy to listen to, especially in the more complex items such as the famous Chaconne by Purcell.
Brian Robins writes at length about the music in this album and the recording is vivid and lithely produced in typical Gaudeamus fashion. Recommended with enthusiasm.”
